Not satisfied with the modules? Are they running too slow? Well, short of buying an even faster PowerMac, there are a few quick solutions to most problems:
Work in the correct colour setting for the module (most modules have a preferred setting, see the read me file for details). You can often see a speedup of several times by changing the setting to the optimal one. If you're stuck on a certain setting, then simply choose a module that fits your environment.
Don't run in demo mode. This is fine for finding nifty settings, but not much use for top speed. Many modules run extremely slow in demo mode, so avoid it when you can.
Use After Dark version 3. I realize you may not want to pay for a screen saver, or perhaps have another favourite. That's fine, but these modules are designed to work with After Dark v3. I have tried to support certain other products, but if you use something else, you're on your own for now, and you may get really bad performance from the modules. This may change, so keep an eye out for newer versions.
Get the latest version. This is the first release. If it's after March, 1995 and you're using this, chances are it's out of date. I plan to add many modules, so get a newer version and don't miss out.
Use a small monitor (or only run Gloss, Ice, Madman's Quilt, or Rainbow). Most modules refresh the whole screen, and on a bigger monitor that takes longer. If you want somewhat smoother motion, try turning down the speed (or wind) on modules with that option. Plasma/Plasma3D, Harmony, and Denizens can look nice even on large monitors with the right settings. Experiment.
Don't use an AV Power Macintosh. Most modules will run much slower on these models when the monitor's hooked to the AV card. Sorry, but it's just the way they're designed. The good news is that they never run at less than 50% of the speed you'd get without the AV.
If none of the above work, then perhaps you're justing expecting too much from the PowerPC. It's only a RISC chip, after all. Then again, it could be my fault, because I'm only a hobbyist programmer. Lucky for you I'm not a real one, or there'd be more bugs and you'd be out $20 (or moreā¦)
